NELSON'S EARLY LIFE
Horatio Nelson was born on 29 September 1758 in a rectory in Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk, England, the sixth of eleven children of the Reverend Edmund Nelson and his wife Catherine Suckling. He was named after his godfather Horatio Walpole (1723–1809) then 2nd Baron Walpole, of Wolterton.
-
Nelson attended Paston Grammar School, North Walsham, until he was 12 years old, and also attended King Edward VI’s Grammar School in Norwich. His naval career began on 1 January 1771, when he reported to the third-rate HMS Raisonnable as an ordinary seaman and coxswain under his maternal uncle, Captain Maurice Suckling, who commanded the vessel. Shortly after reporting aboard, Nelson was appointed a midshipman and began officer training. Early in his service, Nelson discovered that he suffered from seasickness, a chronic complaint that dogged him for the rest of his life.
-
HISTORICAL BATTLES
Nelson took part in the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where his attack was defeated and he was badly wounded, losing his right arm, and was forced to return to England to recuperate. The following year, he won a decisive victory over the French at the Battle of the Nile and remained in the Mediterranean to support the Kingdom of Naples against a French invasion. In 1801, he was dispatched to the Baltic and won another victory, this time over the Danes at the Battle of Copenhagen. He subsequently commanded the blockade of the French and Spanish fleets at Toulon and, after their escape, chased them to the West Indies and back but failed to bring them to battle. After a brief return to England, he took over the Cádiz blockade in 1805. On 21 October 1805, the Franco-Spanish fleet came out of port, and Nelson's fleet engaged them at the Battle of Trafalgar. The battle was Britain's greatest naval victory, but during the action, Nelson, aboard HMS Victory, was fatally wounded by a French sharpshooter. His body was brought back to England where he was accorded a state funeral.
-
Nelson's death at Trafalgar secured his position as one of Britain's most heroic figures.

Portrait Engraving of Society Lady After Hoppner Paintings Published 1906 By W.M.Fowler
Fine Engraving London Published 1906 By W.M.Fowler, 121 Victoria Street Westminster SW.
-
Elegant Portrait After John Hoppner of Socety Lady wearing beautiful satin gown with blue ribbons and a large great gatsby hat dressed with large blue bow.
-
The period is late 18th Century and is influenced in the Rococco style after artist John Hoppner.
-
ABOUT JOHN HOPPNER 1758-1810
Hoppner was born in Whitechapel, London, the son of German parents - his mother was one of the German attendants at the royal palace.King George showed a fatherly interest and patronage of the young boy that gave rise to rumours, quite unfounded that he may have been his illegitimate son.
-
Hoppner first exhibited at the Royal Academy In 1780. His earliest love was for landscape, but necessity obliged him to turn to the more lucrative business of portrait painting. At once successful, he had throughout life the most fashionable and wealthy sitters, and was the greatest rival to the growing attraction of Thomas Lawrence.
-
In 1803 he published A Series of Portraits of Ladies, engraved after his paintings by Charles Wilkin and in 1805 a volume of translations of Eastern tales into English verse.
-
Unusually Hoppner painted the background and perhaps more of a full-length portrait of Charlotte, Countess Talbot by Thomas Gainsborough in 1788, the year in which Gainsborough died. It is now in the Dunedin Public Art Gallery.
-
Hoppner was a man of great social power, and had the knowledge and accomplishments of a man of the world.[citation needed]
-
He married Phoebe Wright, the daughter of American-born sculptor Patience Wright. They had five children.
-
In his later years Hoppner suffered from a chronic disease of the liver. He died on the 23 Jan.1810.

19THC ENGRAVING DOGE OF VENICE LEONARDO LOREDAN AFTER PORTRAIT BY GIOVANNI BELLINI C1501
ARTIST:
Giovanni Bellini (c.1435-1516), the most brilliant of a family of painters who dominated Venetian and northern Italian art in the late 15th century, including his father Jacopo, brother Gentile and brother-in-law Mantegna. Gentile travelled through Venice's eastern empire visiting the Ottoman court; Giovanni was more homebound and is credited with popularising portraiture in Venice. "He introduced into Venice the fashion that everyone of a certain rank should have his portrait painted either by him or by some other master," wrote the 16th-century art chronicler Vasari.
>
SUBJECT:
Leonardo Loredan (1436-1521) in his official costume as Doge of Venice, the Venetian Republic's head of state, elected for life by a college of male nobles.
>
Distinguishing features: This painting puts Loredan before us, separated only by the stone ledge he stands behind, yet at the same time he is located in a magic realm of perfect blue sky. It is an astonishing exercise in three-dimensional modelling. Bellini has made this painting as solid and deep in space as the Roman portrait busts that Renaissance artists emulated. You feel you could walk around Loredan, and put your hand between the folds of his clothes. This is what all Renaissance artists wanted to achieve, but what Bellini does with perspec-tive is exceptional. These Roman portrait busts were hard, public images of authority. Early Italian Renaissance portraits of powerful men and women had similar qualities. Loredan, behind his ledge, is as static as a marble bust. Yet he is softened by the tenderness with which Bellini renders his flesh, and the delicacy of his garments.
>
Bellini was the definitive Venetian master of colour, reflecting the rich tones in the canals of the city and the fluid Venetian light. Loredan's face glows with the gold evening sun. His skin looks mellow, its age showing not as decay, but as a muting of harsh lines.
>
And his clothes! Loredan was known as a man who dressed well, and his official dress is sumptuous: the ceremonial headgear of damask with gold thread; the big buttons known as "golden bells". Bellini paints this finery lovingly, mapping the folds of silvery cloth not with line but with light. As with Loredan's golden skin, the effect is intimate, delicate, even vulnerable: there is a gentle side to this representative of Venetian power.
>
Above all, Loredan is Venice. The Doge was the elected head of state, but also the living embodiment of the republic. Bellini's painting operates in this ambiguous territory of the real and the symbolic. Loredan's gaze is hypnotically calm, he has a merciful smile (but the shadowed part of his face suggests you should fear his wrath) and, in his cloudless sky, he seems beyond any anxiety. Venice called itself Serenissima, and in this painting Bellini gives the serene republic a face.
Bellini's genius for defining form through colour is unprecedented in the history of painting, and had incalculable repercussions.
The original portrait is in the Sainsbury Wing of the National Gallery, London WC2.

....................................................

This large print, from the painting by Fred Roe, shows Lord Nelson leaving Portsmouth to join ‘Victory’, before the Battle of Trafalgar. He stands in the stern of the ship’s boat as he is being rowed out to the flagship in the distance behind him, looking back towards the crowd cheering him from the shore and waving his hat in response.
>
By such gestures and imagery, including a draped Union flag, the print seeks dramatic and patriotic effect but the appearance of the sailors and crowd on the quayside owes more to the Edwardian era than the early 19th century.
>
This was one of many interpretations of Nelson that appeared in 1905, the centenary year of his death. The print carries an inscription taken from Robert Southey’s ‘Life of Nelson’, 1814, which was the most accomplished early one in literary terms and was reprinted throughout the 19th century. ‘They pressed upon the parapet to gaze after him when his barge pushed off, and he was returning their cheers by waving his hat … for the people would not be debarred from gazing upon the darling hero of England’ – ‘I had their huzzas before’; he said to Captain Hardy, who sat beside him in the boat, ‘now I have their hearts.’

ABOUT THE ARTIST
The artist, Fred Roe, was a genre painter and illustrator best known for period paintings and historical compositions. Date made 1905

LARGE VICTORIAN HAND COLOURED ENGRAVING PRODUCED BY G.S.SHURY OF FAMILY LIFE AT HOME AFTER PAINTING BY ARTIST THOMAS BROOKS TITLED CHARITY C1860 SIZE 29.25" X 38.75"
A fine quality hand coloured engraving, depicting family life at home in Victorian times, after the original painting by Thomas Brooks, titled "Charity" c1860.

A rare surviving genuine original example dating from 1860, and produced in limited numbers with few surviving in perfect sate.
(NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH MODERN COPIES)

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

"BROOKS, Thomas (1818-1891)
Born Hull 1818, went to London 1838, studied at Sass's art school for six months and then at the RA. After a year in the studio of Henry Perronet Briggs, he studied in Paris, returning to Hull to work as a portrait painter for five years. Moved permanently to London 1845 and became a successful genre painter. Also painted marine subjects after 1860. Some 40 of his works were popular through engravings. Exhibited 55 genre pictures at the RA between 1843 and 1882, 19 at the BI 1846-67, and 11 at the SBA 1846-68. Died 1891, in June according to The Year's Art (1892); his death was noted in the July 1891 issue of the Art Journal (p224).

INTERPRETATION OF THE SCENE

The young boy, having been crying earlier,is seen having just opened the oak planked door for a well wrapped visiting neighbour with her young daughter leading the way.

The girl is shown bringing a generous offering of fruit in a lattice work cane bowl, carefully carrying towards the lady seen sitting with her pale looking child held on lap and looking sickly.

With two daughters to feed and a young baby depicted snuggled up warm under a hand made patchwork quilt, the child carefully wrapped up securely within a heavy cane hooded cradle.

The babies mother sits with her foot seen resting on an old tripod legged oak stool, having a woven floor matt beneath her feet,to try to prevent the coldness of the quarry tiled floor, from making all their feet cold and chilled.

With only afew vegetables to eat,a solitary half peeled turnip is seen abandoned on the floor, next to their absent fathers hat.

The large open fireplace is the focal point of the room and scene, with the whole family waiting for the large cast iron cauldron to come to the boil, seen hanging and steaming over the open fire, hopefully full of vegetables still cooking.

The table being scarcely laid with only a solitary cup and a distinct blue and white teapot shown sat on the dull table cloth.

The baby sleeps on oblivious to the harsh life they have to lead.

HISTORY OF SOCIETY OF DILETTANTI:

The Dilettante Society or Dilettanti is a society of noblemen and scholars which sponsors the study of ancient Greek and Roman art, and the creation of new work in the style.
It first met in 1732 and was formally established as a London dining club in 1734 by a group of people who had been on the Grand Tour.

The group, initially led by Francis Dashwood, contained several dukes and was later joined by Joshua Reynolds, David Garrick, Uvedale Price and Richard Payne Knight, among others.

The society quickly became wealthy, through a system in which members made contributions to various funds to support building schemes and archaeological expeditions.

The first artist associated with the group was George Knapton.

The Society of Dilletanti aimed to correct and purify the public taste of the country; from the 1740s, it began to support Italian opera.

A few years before Sir Joshua Reynolds became a member, the group worked towards the objective of forming a public academy, and from the 1750s, it was the prime mover in establishing the Royal Academy.
In 1775 the club had accumulated enough money towards a scholarship fund for the purpose of supporting a student's travel to Rome and Greece, or for archaeological expeditions such as that of Richard Chandler, William Pars and Nicholas Revett, the results of which they published in Ionian Antiquities, a major influence on neo-Classicism in Britain.

The Society has 60 members, elected by secret ballot. An induction ceremony is held at a London club. It makes annual donations to the British Schools in Rome and Athens, and a separate fund set up in 1984 provides financial assistance for visits to classical sites and museums.
