Montague Dawson Signed Lithograph of The Mayflower.Marine Pictures
MONTAGUE DAWSON b.1890
Pencil Signed Coloured Lithograph Titled "The Gallant Mayflower", bearing blind stamp lower left.
-
ABOUT THE MAYFLOWER.

The Mayflower was an English ship that famously transported the first English Puritans, known today as the Pilgrims, from Plymouth, England to the New World in 1620.
There were 102 passengers, and the crew is estimated to have been about 30, but the exact number is unknown.
This voyage has become an iconic story in some of the earliest annals of American history, with its story of death and of survival in the harsh New England winter environment.
The culmination of the voyage in the signing of the Mayflower Compact was an event which established a rudimentary form of democracy, with each member contributing to the welfare of the community.
There was a second ship named Mayflower that made the London to Plymouth, Massachusetts voyage several times.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Montague Dawson was a British painter who was renowned as a maritime artist. His most famous paintings depict sailing ships, usually clippers or warships of the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1924 Dawson was the official artist for an Expedition to the South Seas by the steam yacht St.George. During the expedition he provided illustrated reports to the Graphic magazine. During these years his artwork was also published in the newspaper The Sphere. His works are featured in the Royal Naval Museum and the National Maritime Museum. Dawson was present at the final surrender of the German High Seas Fleet and many of his illustrations depicting the event were published in theSphere. After the War, Dawson established himself as a professional marine artist, concentrating on historical subjects and portraits of deep-water sailing ships often in stiff breeze or on high seas. During the Second World War, he was employed as a war artist and again worked for The Sphere. Dawson exhibited regularly at the Royal Society of Marine Artists, of which he became a member, from 1946 to 1964, and occasionally at the Royal Academy between 1917 and 1936. By the 1930s he was considered one of the greatest living marine artists, whose patrons included two American Presidents, Dwight D Eisenhower and Lyndon B Johnson, as well as the British Royal Family. The work of Montague Dawson is represented in the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich and the Royal Naval Museum, Portsmouth.

His main body of work concentrates on the effects of sunlight on the Highland scenery at different times of the day. Between 1905 and 1920, de Breanski painted a series of English garden scenes done in a colourful, impressionistic style. He occasionally signed his paintings 'A.F. de Breanski Jr.' De Breanski exhibited several works during his lifetime at the Royal Academy and at the Royal Society of British Artists.

MARILYN MONROE FRAMED ADVERTISEMENT ON BOARD C1950 24INS X 36 INS
Biography

Marilyn Monroe personified Hollywood glamour with an unparalleled glow and energy that enamored the world. Although she was an alluring beauty with voluptuous curves and a generous pout, Marilyn was more than a '50s sex goddess. Her apparent vulnerability and innocence, in combination with an innate sensuality, has endeared her to the global consciousness. She dominated the age of movie stars to become, without question, the most famous woman of the 20th Century.

She was born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926 in Los Angeles, California, to Gladys Baker. As the identity of her father is undetermined, she was later baptized Norma Jeane Baker. Gladys had been a film cutter at RKO studios, but psychological problems prevented her from keeping the job and she was eventually committed to a mental institution.

Norma Jeane spent most of her childhood in foster homes and orphanages until 1937, when she moved in with family friend Grace McKee Goddard. Unfortunately, when Grace's husband was transferred to the East Coast in 1942, the couple couldn't afford to take 16-year-old Norma Jeane with them. Norma Jeane had two options: return to the orphanage or get married.

On June 19, 1942 she wed her 21-year-old neighbor Jimmy Dougherty, whom she had been dating for six months. "She was a sweet, generous and religious girl," Jimmy said. "She liked to be cuddled." By all accounts Norma Jeane loved Jimmy, and they were happy together until he joined the Merchant Marines and was sent to the South Pacific in 1944.

PABLO PICASSO EARLY PRINT OF LOVER DORA MAAR IN 1960 ORIGINAL FRAME 21 X 27 INCHES
ABOUT PABLO PICASSO

Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain on October 25, 1881.
By the age of 15 he was already technically skilled in drawing and painting.

Picasso's highly original style continuously evolved throughout his long career, expanding the definition of what art could be.

In addition to painting, he would explore sculpture, ceramics and other art forms, and become one of the most influential artists of the 1900s.

Picasso died on April 8, 1973 at his home, Notre-Dame-de-Vie in Mougin, France. He was buried on April 10 at his chateau Vauvenagues, 170 kilometers from Mougin.

ABOUT DORA MAAR (Person in this early print)

COPY & PASTE LINK BELOW INTO BROWSER

http://www.sapergalleries.com/PicassoBloch299Detail.html

Dora Maar (November 22, 1907 – July 16, 1997) was a French photographer, poet and painter of Croatian descent, best known for being a lover and muse of Pablo Picasso.

Before meeting Picasso, Maar was already famous as a photographer. She also painted. She met Picasso in January 1936 on the terrace of the Café les Deux Magots in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Paris, when she was 29 years old and he 54.

Picasso was attracted by her beauty and self-mutilation (she cut her fingers and the table playing "the knife game"; he got her bloody gloves and exhibited them on a shelf in his apartment). She spoke Spanish fluently, so Picasso was even more fascinated. Their relationship lasted nearly nine years.

Maar became the rival of Picasso's blonde mistress, Marie-Thérèse Walter, who had a newborn daughter with Picasso, named Maya. Picasso often painted beautiful, sad Dora, who suffered because she was sterile, and called her his "private muse."

She made herself better known in the art world with her photographs of the successive stages of the completion of Guernica, which Picasso painted in his workshop on the rue des Grands Augustins, and other photographic portraits of Picasso. Together, she and Picasso studied printing with Man Ray.

Maar kept his paintings for herself until her death in 1997.
They were souvenirs of her extraordinary love affair, which made her famous forever.

In Paris, still occupied by the Germans, Picasso left to her a drawing from 1915 as a goodbye gift in April 1944; it represents Max Jacob, his close friend who had just died in the transit camp of Drancy after his arrest by the Nazis.
He also left to her some still lifes and a house at Ménerbes in Provence.

VICTORIAN PRINT OF THE BAY OF NAPLES AFTER AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR PAINTING BY ARTIST THOMAS LEESON ROWBOTHAM 1860
We are pleased to offer this delightful coloured print depicting the Bay of Naples with a distant view of Mount Vesuvius seen in the mountainous background.

A typical neopolitan view of Victorian day to day life in this Italian fishing port, showing sailing vessels and a fishing punt anchored off the rocks.

This rare coloured panoramic print has been cleverly produced after the original watercolour painting by the artist T L Rothbotham, being made to look realistically like a genuine watercolour, having the visual texture and wash seen on watercolour paper.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

ROWBOTHAM, THOMAS CHARLES LEESON (1823–1875), landscape painter in watercolours, son of Thomas Leeson Rowbotham (1783–1853), professor of drawing at the Royal Naval School, New Cross, was born in Dublin on 21 May 1823.

He was instructed in art by his father, a master of perspective, whose skill at the same time as a delineator of marine subjects inspired his son with his taste for river and coast scenery.

His first serious work in art was done in 1847 on a sketching tour in Wales, which was followed in succeeding years by visits to Scotland, Germany, and Normandy.
In 1848 he was elected an associate of the New Society (now the Royal Institute) of Painters in Water-colours, of which in 1851 he became a full member, and he contributed to its exhibitions no less than 464 works.

He succeeded his father as professor of drawing at the Royal Naval School, collaborated with him in ‘The Art of Painting in Water-colours,’ and illustrated his book of ‘The Art of Sketching from Nature.’ He was a skilful artist, apt at catching the salient beauties of picturesque or romantic scenery, and fond of introducing figures, generally large enough to form a prominent part of the composition.

He was not, however, a good painter of figures, and these in his later drawings were often the work of his eldest son, Charles.

In his later years his love for sunny effects led him to restrict himself to Italian subjects, especially those of sea or lake, although he had never been in Italy.
He was also a good musician and chess-player.

His health was never strong, and he died at Percy Lodge, Campden Hill, Kensington, on 30 June 1875, leaving a widow and eight children almost entirely unprovided for.
He was buried in Kensal Green cemetery. His remaining works were sold by auction by Messrs. Christie, Manson, & Woods on 21 April 1876, together with a number of sketches and drawings contributed by his professional friends to the fund raised for the benefit of his family.

There are four drawings by him in the South Kensington Museum—‘Lake Scenery,’ ‘St. Godard, Rouen,’ ‘The Wrecked Boat,’ and ‘Rouen from the Heights of St. Catharine.’ Ruskin praised his work, and in 1858 said he had the making of a good landscape-painter, in spite of his ‘artificialness’.

Rowbotham published in 1875 small volumes of ‘English Lake Scenery’ and ‘Picturesque Scottish Scenery,’ and a series of chromolithographic ‘Views of Wicklow and Killarney,’ with descriptive text by the Rev. W. J. Loftie. He also contributed illustrations to Cassell's ‘Picturesque Europe.’ He published many other chromolithographs; a series entitled ‘T. L. Rowbotham's Sketch Book’ was issued after his death.
